Maintenance Guide

Teak wood maintenance

The teak used in Kettal products is obtained by selecting the best trunks from sustainably managed plantations controlled by Perhutani. Only the most appropriate trees are selected, one by one. The area used is the central part of the trunk, as it is the straightest and free of branches. From this painstaking selection process we obtain our teak, one of the finest in the world. The wood is planed to give it a more natural feel, and a sealant is applied. All Kettal teak products are provided with a waterproof sealant, which should be applied every three months.

Teak is a natural material, the following characteristics may occur: Changes in colour, Knots, Cracks

WARNING. Being a natural material, teak may change colour or even crack due to humidity levels and sudden changes in temperature. Left outdoors, teak undergoes a natural process of oxidation that affects its colour, which turns an attractive silver-grey shade. Teak furniture is treated with a waterproof sealant to protect it from damp and stains (as long as they are cleaned immediately); however, this sealant naturally wears off over time. We recommend treating the wood with sealant every three months, more frequently in the case of hotel and catering establishments. To restore the original appearance of teak, sand all over and apply teak sealant.

Marble

Kettal Marble is light and strong, thanks to its technical structure, a combination of marble, aluminium honeycomb and fibreglass. It is a natural matte carbonate stone from the metamorphosed limestone family that is outstanding for its compact texture and fine crystalline structure. This marble is highly resistant to impact, is of reduced thickness, which makes cleaning easier. Cleaning and Maintenance. Clean only with a soft cloth, warm water and pH neutral detergent. Do not use: acids, ammonia, abrasive powders, window cleaners and so on. Any substance with an acid pH will damage marble: lemon juice, wine, etc. Marble is treated with a waterproof sealant to protect it from damp and stains (as long as they are cleaned immediately); however, this sealant naturally wears off over time. We recommend treating the marble with sealant every three months, more frequently in the case of hotel and catering establishments.

Leather

Genuine cowhide used in high-wear areas. It has a stain-resistant finish and is easy to clean. One of its key features is its resistance to stains. Thanks to this and many other features, Kettal Leather requires no specific or costly maintenance. CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE. For everyday maintenance, clean with a soft cloth and warm water. To extend the life of Kettal Leather, we recommend using a neutral non-oily leather care product every six months. In case of stains, rub gently in circles with a damp cloth from the centre of the stain outwards. Dry the treated area with a cloth. Leather is a natural material, which means there may be slight variations in colour.

Kettal aluminium maintenance

Clean with non corrosive, non abrasive cleaners. No scrub pad nor pressure cleaner should be used.

Kettal glass maintenance

Clean with non corrosive, non abrasive cleaners. No scrub pad nor pressure cleaner should be used. Care should be taken not to scratch the powder coated paint on the underside of the glass.

Red Balau

Balau is a tropical wood from the Dipterocarpaceae family. It is a compact high-density wood with a high tropical resin and oil content. Balau is used in nautical construction due to its robustness and resistance, and it is prized for is hardness and excellent water-resistant properties. The mechanical properties of balau are optimum; however, this wood is little-known among the general public. One of its characteristics is that it is heavier and harder than teak. The ideal wood for manufacturing garden or outdoor furniture.
CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE For maintenance, the use of wood protectors, such as teak oil or varnish, is recommended, depending on the amount of time the product is exposed.

Maintenance of Kettal synthetic fibre and porotex textile

The only maintenance required for the synthetic fibre and the porotex mesh is an annual cleaning to get rid of dust and environmental debris (oils, damp) that can be trapped in the mesh or braiding. We recommend spraying the furniture with GRUPO KETTAL universal cleaner ref. 8010-000, then wiping it gently with a soft sponge and rinsing with water. Rinsing the synthetic fibre with pressurized water provides better results. It is advisable to clean the synthetic fibre before storing it for the winter and at the beginning of its season of regular use.

Kettal acrylic fabric maintenance

The cloth selected by GRUPO KETTAL offers an exceptional grammage with a weight of 270 g/m². GRUPO KETTAL cushions have been treated exclusively with fluorocarbon to protect the fabric from possible stains and other liquids. Fabric maintenance is simple: Brush the fabric occasionally; the fabric can be machine washed at any time following the instructions on the inner label. Throughout the fabric’s useful life, we recommend maintaining the exclusive fluorocarbon impermeable treatment by applying GRUPO KETTAL Fabric Protector ref. 8010-003 according to the instructions.

Rope

For proper cleaning of the rope, use a dampened cloth in a solution of warm water and mild soap. Use that to clean the rope and then rinse with another damp cloth with water only. Allow to air dry. If the stain is deep or dirt persists, re-wet the rope with soap and water and rub with a soft plastic bristle brush. Rinse and let dry. Do not use water pressure cleaners or harsh chemicals (bleach, ammonia, ...) that can affect the fibers that make up the rope.

IMO Fabrics

The various public transport sectors have published their own codes and requirements for vehicle upholstery products. The requirements for bedding follow the same trend of evaluating flammability and flame spread. EN 1021-1 and EN 1021-2 (see attachment). In the case of sea transport, the Fire Protection Code (FTP Code) issued by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) is applied. The test applicable to bedding is the same as the tests specified in the European standards. Approval of a product or batch of products is subordinated to performance of production control and assessment tests supervised by Inspection Bodies. The aviation industry is governed by Federal Aviation Regulations guidelines, whose less representative tests evaluate the combustibility of vertically suspended materials exposed to a flame. The rail industry is currently undergoing a European harmonisation process by means of the European specification CEN/TS 45545-2, which establishes the requirements for materials on rail vehicles depending on the sprinkler category specified for the vehicle. In the case of bedding (R19), in addition to requiring compliance with specific European standards (EN ISO 12925), other standards are applied for evaluating heat release (ISO 5660-1) and toxic and dense smoke production (EN ISO 5659-2) with non corrosive, non abrasive cleaners. No scrub pad nor pressure cleaner should be used. Care should be taken not to scratch the powder coated paint on the underside of the glass.
